Doctor Who: The Visitation (Special Edition)

looking forward to it
This is one of the better Davison stories and thus a fit selection for the special edition treatment. I like these SEs; I have no regret over getting The Aztecs and The Ark in Space as they both look incredible.
They seem to have extra-care taken with the presentation; updated information and documentaries are always welcome, especially now that almost all the telly serials have been released. The covers look great, too!

A whiny reviewer accused 2Entertain of trying to get as much money as they could from fans but in fact 2Entertain doesn't exist anymore. BBC keeps releasing these new editions because they know the fans want them!

Your mileage may vary
I consider this serial to be middling, neither awful or exceptional. The story is fun enough by Classic Who standards, especially if you like the genre in which the Doctor turns out to have been involved in a major historic event (which I do). Peter Davison is charming in it, the plot hangs together (although episode 3 drags a bit as Nyssa takes seemingly forever to construct what amounts to a big vibrator) and the guest character of the actor/highwayman is amusing. Unfortunately, it's directed by Peter Moffatt, whose work on Doctor Who is completely uninspired. There are better Who stories, but it's worth seeing for fans of Davison's Doctor. However, if you already have the 2004 DVD release you probably don't need to buy this one. The commentary is the same. The new material consists of a visit by the main cast (Davison, Janet Fielding and Sarah Sutton, accompanied by Mark Strickson) to the location where the episode was filmed, and a field trip by the same group to BBC Television...

Dr. Who With a Historical Twist - Special Edition
The Doctor plans to take Tegan home, to 1981 Heathrow, where she was on her way to interview for an airline attendant position before she made a detour onto the TARDIS. With impeccable skill, the Doctor lands at Heathrow's exact position. With typical misadventure, though, he lands them in 1666, not 1981. The Doctor, Tegan, Nyssa and Adric stroll through the woods outside the TARDIS, only to be attacked by masked men. Our heroes are temporarily rescued by a well-spoken rogue, who introduces himself, "A gentleman of the road, Madam. Richard Mace at your service."

Mace tells them that their attackers are normally law-abiding villagers. But the plague has hit, and strangers possibly carrying the pestilence are run off. The plague came on the heels of a blazing comet a few weeks before. "A portent of doom if ever I saw one," Mace tells them. "It's aurora barely faded from the sky before the first local case was reported."

The Doctor is puzzled, "They're not due for a...

Tinman - The Mini-Series Event - BD [Blu-ray]

An Intriguing Mini-Series
Oz the Great and Powerful is being released on Blu-Ray and DVD this week, but the film isn't the only recent Oz incarnation. Back in 2007, the Sci Fi Channel (now known as SyFy) aired a three-part mini-series Tin Man, based on L. Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, but with a science fiction twist. Mill Creek Entertainment released Tin Man on Blu-Ray and DVD last month, which they kindly sent me a free copy in exchange for my honest review.

Zooey Deschanel plays DG, a small town waitress who life is completely changed when a storm sends her to O.Z. (Outer Zone). She quickly befriends Glitch (played by Alan Cumming), a former "Tin Man" law enforcer named Wyatt Cain (played by Neal McDonough), and Raw (played by Raoul Trujillo). O.Z. is now ruled by Azkadellia, who had overthrown her own mother, the Queen, and Azkadellia happens to be DG's sister.

DG learns about her true heritage. It seems that the original Dorothy Gale is actually her...

Tinman not Wizard of Oz, but still great
If you are looking for a continuation of the Wizard of Oz in the style of the Judy Garland musical, you will be disappointed. If you are looking for a new take on it, then you may be pleasantly surprised. It is NOT Disney's mediocre "Return To OZ" or their even worse "OZ The Great and Powerful". IF you liked them, you may not like this. I did enjoy it.
D.G. (Zooey Deschanel who is very good, despite what the previous review says) is a small town waitress who wants more from life, but doesn't know what. Through a series of events she ends up in OZ, where it turns out she came from in the first place. A cruel sorceress/witch is turning it into a wasteland after deposing the great Mystic Man/Wizard (Richard Dreyfuss) and D.G. meets versions of the Lion the Scarecrow and the Tin Man, who was one of the wizard's police (hence "tin man").
What is done to the Mystic Man is disturbing, and so are things that happen - I won't spoil it by saying what - but this is more a reworking for...

Review
So I really enjoy this movie/series. Its a fun, re-imaging of the wizard of oz which is one of my favorite books/movie...

Honor Flight [HD]

Thank You Veterans
I had the privilege to see this documentary in a theater recently. We took a 93 year old WWII Veteran with us. It was an amazing and moving experience.
The documentary is about a community that comes together to take World War II Veterans to see the Memorial in Washington DC, at no cost to them. It was a project that took on a life of its own and so many were able to go.
I lost my father over 25 years ago. He and his brother served together. He never talked about the war. This documentary tells us that the soldiers "came home from the war, put their duffle bags in the basement and went out and got jobs." Most of them never talked about their experiences and now we are losing those Veterans at the rate of over 900 per day, and their stories and experiences are going with them. This documentary got the Veterans to open up and talk about it, many for the first time.
We have the freedom we have today because of them, and we need to hear their stories.
On our...

For my Dad....and my heart!
My 85th Birthday gift to my proud WWII Navy Vet Dad was an Honor Flight in October 2011. This movie brought it all back--the excitement, the tears, the pride of those exhausted but thrilled members of our Greatest Generation. "Honor Flight" came to our local theater at a stressful time in my life when my expectations of folks were pretty low. Seeing this movie and reliving our trip with Dad at my side IMMEDIATELY returned my perspective to the correct view--awe, humility and gratitude for our freedom, purchased by them then and being purchased by our Vets and Active Duty personnel today. "Thank you for your service" will never be enough. I intend to order at least one more copy on payday.

A proud and grateful daughter.

A Must See
Its hard to write a review five minutes after watching this film. I was lucky enough to order this on Pre-order direct and watched this right away. This is an amazing program to support. I strongly recommend everyone to watch this to remember what you forgot and who you may have forgotten. I think of my Grandfather, and how much I miss him along with all the times I didn't thank him. Simply amazing

Kämpfer für die Liebe

The adventures of one gender confused guy continue
The adventures of Natsuru the hottest guy/girl continue in these two new episodes. Poor Natsuru thought after all this time, he would be used to being a boy/girl, but when his female attibutes grow to big for her underwear, she takes a job at a new cafe with AMane, hoping to earn enough money to buy new bras. However when the cafe is hosting a school mixer - lead by the sadistic school president, poor Natsuru is pulling double body duty trying to host and work at the same time. Add a locker and some nosy co-workers and watch the clothes fly. BUt of course the White Kapfers are still gunning for both red and blue, so Natsuru and Amane are invited to move in with the Red Kamfers, for mutual defense and survival. Nothing could possibly be suspicious.....right????

Overall the two episodes add to the Kampfer universe and bring on more of the same hijinks from the full series. Still teen rateing, though the ecchi level is very high. I hope this is a bridge to being out a...

Hop on to new adventure
This Kampfer OVA made up of two episodes which the first story picks up the morning following the White Kampfer battle episode in the other Kampfer DVD set. The first OVA story deals with White Kampfer plot of revenge after what had happened the previous night and previous DVD set. Once again it up to Red and Blue Kampfers working together.

The 2nd OVA adventure deals with Natsuru starting to think like a girl and wanting an adorable bra that cost a bit more money. Natsuru takes a job at the Bunny girl cafe to afford the bra but when his male self goes on a double date the school student president has funny making Natsuru running back and fourth to the booth in both male Natsuru date form and female Natsuru waitress form.

An after-party that never should have happened
Not gonna lie -- "Kampfer: Fur Die Liebe" was a huge disappointment. The original 13-episode Kampfer TV series was no masterpiece, but it was a fun and capable little anime. It had a wacky premise, nice artwork, some decent action scenes, a lot of very funny awkwardness (romantic or otherwise), and an endearing cast. Natsuru, Akane, Suzuka, Mikoto, Sakura, and their gruesome stuffed-animal minions were loaded with personality, and getting to know them was a fun romp. The original also featured plenty of "fanservice," but it was dispensed evenly enough that it usually worked in conjunction with the plot (such as it was) and with the humor. Kampfer also managed to end on a fairly strong note, which is something that very few anime can boast. I was looking forward to this sequel, but... oy.

The problem is honestly the fanservice. I'm a straight dude who appreciates the stuff, but it's like cologne -- throw too much on, and everything starts to stink. The first of the two OVAs...

Escape

A Spare Survival Adventure From Norway: Not Much Plot, But Well Executed
I wasn't really sure what to anticipate from the Norwegian film "Escape." The marketing artwork, packaging and description make it seem like this might be a cheesy kid's adventure film. So I strapped in and hoped for the best. And as is often the case with relatively low expectations, I was pleasantly surprised. There isn't a whole lot of plot in this spare 80 minute film, but the action sequences were well executed and the movie held my interest throughout. The title really explains the entire film premise. It's about an escape with not much back story or explanation either before or after the event. By keeping things simple and straightforward, however, the movie succeeds in telling a concise little story. It may not be a great movie, but it is entertaining. The DVD/Blu-ray has the option of an English dubbed soundtrack, but I watched the film with subtitles. I can't, therefore, comment on the quality of the dub which is oftentimes distracting and annoying to my personal...

One of those diamonds in the rough
I usually don't bother writing reviews, but I do like to leave at least some feedback when I come across that rare budget movie that actually turns out to be fairly good. Well, this is one of those diamonds in the rough even though the plot was simple. The acting was good, and the script was well written. I was pleasantly surprised :) Sorry for the simple review, but again I don't usually care to write reviews.

Cheers!

A Hidden Gem
It's not the best cinematography ever, it is a foreign language film with English subtitles. A very good story, actors were good (especially the two young lasses).
I'm surprised to find this gem hidden back on page one hundred something. It should be up front, at least ahead of "I spit on your grave" & "Godzilla vs Megagodzilla"
Hunger Games, Hanna type movie, action, drama. Dagmar is Hawtt! In a Johnny Winter sort of way.

Something New

How could HIMYM ever go wrong?
I had just finished all of Seasons 1 through 7 on Netflix and I didn't know what I was going to do to watch Season 8. It's not on Hulu or any other valid website, the DVD isn't released yet and probably won't be until the fall AFTER the new (and final) season starts. I couldn't bear to miss more and find a way to catch up later, so buying the instant video episodes on here was one of the best decisions I've made! Season 8 is hilarious, touching, and everything else good about this show. I highly recommend buying the instant vids if you need to find a quick way to watch Season 8!

Amazing show
God, I love this show. I recommend you watch it now, its so funny! Legen - wait for it - dary!

Loved it
Since me and my husband are the same age as the gang we really enjoy it. Also it is amazing to see that relationships and jokes are cross cultural .
